D.K. “Curcumin Fights Brain Disease” by Russell Blaylock, M.D. drew my interest to the article he wrote.
I know several families whom have been affected by devastating neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. I have seen their pain while watching their loved one be robbed of a quality life.
This article is encouraging the use of a spice to help with brain health. Please read on to see which spice! Here is Dr. Blaylock’s research……
“More than a decade ago, it was noted that people who took anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, or non -steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as naproxen, indomethacin, or ibuprofen, were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimers or Parkinsons disease.”
At first scientist thought that these medications’ anti-inflammatory effect was protecting users against these diseases.”
“Fairly recently, scientists discovered that certain natural substances also reduce the risk of these degenerative brain disease, while conventional treatments still offer little hope.”
“Very few drugs have been developed for these conditions. Most that have been created are extremely toxic and have many complications, yet offer little benefit for the condition they are meant to treat.”
“One of the most impressive of the natural compounds used in combating Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s is Curcumin”
“Several animal models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s have been used to evaluate treatments. Some of the human trials are now under way as well, and the early results are promising”
“Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, curcumin addresses the cause of the problem of neurodegenerative brain diseases.” Several studies have shown that curcumin does things no other known substance can do:
- Reduces the formation any amyloid in the brain
- Reduces the formation of amyloid plaque
- Dissolves amyloid plaque once it has formed
Even more remarkable, curcumin can do these things in very low concentrations, easily attainable by oral supplementation.
“Curcumin not only dramatically reduces the amount of the oligomeric amyloid, it also significantly reduces its toxicity-thus doubling its benefits against Alzheimer’s disease. And again, it does this in very small concentration.”
D.K. It would be truly wonderful if indeed turmeric could positively affect the lives of patient with neurological diseases. I also checked Dr. Andrew Weil’s thoughts on curcumin. First he describes what it is.
“Tumeric is derived from the rhizomes (underground stems) of the plant Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family. It is responsible for the yellow color of Indian curry and American mustard.”
“Curcumin, which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is the most active constituent of turmeric.”
“In addition to its use as a culinary spice, Turmeric has been used traditionally in India as a disinfectant and treatment for laryngitis, bronchitis, and diabetes.“
“Population studies have shown that elderly villagers in India appear to have the lowest rate of Alzheimer’s Disease in the world, and researchers have speculated that the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin may be partly responsible.”
Alzheimer’s begins as an inflammatory process in the brain, and Indians eat turmeric with almost every meal. Other studies of turmeric and curcumin have shown have shown the following benefits:
- Turmeric extract worked as well as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee….Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine
- Laboratory studies suggest that curcumin acts as a weak phytoestrogen and seems to have cancer protective effects.
- Lab studies have also shown that curcumin induces programmed death of colon cancer cells, and clinical trials are investigating the use of curcumin in treatment of colon cancer.
- Curcumin suppresses microinflammation in the GI tract associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Weil frequently“ recommends turmeric supplements and believes whole turmeric is more effective than isolated curcumin for inflammatory disorders, including arthritis, tendonitis, and autoimmune conditions. Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts ( available in tablets or capsules) three times per day or as directed on the product label.
“Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Neither curcumin nor turmeric taken orally is well absorbed unless taken with black pepper or pipeline, a constituent of black pepper.”
D.K. Please let me know if you decide to do research on this spice. Please share your findings with me if you feel it would be helpful to others. Many thanks!”
