Dr. Russell Blaylock
Dr. Blaylock has a very informative wellness report with the goal of Living a Long, Healthy Life.
Here is a summary of his thoughts on supplementation.
Dr. Blaylock feels the “foundation of a healthy life” is a healthy diet. However, that is often hard to practice in our hurried lives. Many folks chose supplementation to fill in the nutritional gaps. “Yet when people take supplements, they assume that taking just one or two of these nutrients can supply all of the essential building blocks the body needs.”
Myth: All You Need Is Food
“I have always thought that this was a particularly troublesome proposition, especially because there are mountains of evidence showing severe nutritional deficiencies in numerous people of all ages. The average Western diet is filled with harmful fats, processed sugar, dangerous artificial sweeteners, iron-laden meats, tons of food additives fluoridated water, and food dyes.”
“For years, I have been writing about how nutritional supplements can correct dietary deficiencies and lead to dramatic reduction in disease.”
Omega 3: Helps Every Cell in Body
“Believe it or not, a simple oil could be the key ingredient to a long, happy life. This miracle fat not only prevents heart attacks and help you avoid a stroke- it could also protect you from depression and other brain disorders.”
Many of our fast foods are devoid of Omega 3’s. “Even the fish we eat, because they are mostly farm-raised, eat only grains. So they too lack omega-3 fats. The problem has reached epidemic proportions, and we are now paying the price.”
“There is a demonstrated connection between several brain disorders and diets that are low in omega-3 fats and high in omega-6 fats. .”
For instance, one study found that a schizophrenic patients who ate more omega-3 fats had less severe symptoms and responded to medications better and with fewer side effects. In fact, other studies have shown that schizophrenic patients had less omega-3 fat in their skin and brain cells.
“Some studies have linked Alzheimer’s disease to diets low in omega-3 and high in omega -6, which is found in processed vegetable oils that are routinely touted as “healthy.”
“If you constantly indulge in sugary sweets (candies, cakes and pies), the risk of Alzheimer’s goes even more”.
“Parkinson’s, like Alzheimer’s, is considered a brain-inflammation disorder and has been linked to poor dietary habits.”
“Two other diseases that are growing at an alarming rate- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism –have been linked to significantly low levels of omega-3 in the diet.
Curcumin: More Powerful Than Drugs
D.K. In the spice section under Health Tips I go into depth about this beneficial spice. I hope you will look into the wonderful benefits of it.
“Curcumin is the principle flavonoid in turmeric, making up 2 to 5 % of the plant. It has many medicinal properties including:
“Human studies have shown that even in very high doses ( as much as 10,000) mg per day, curcumin has little toxicity. It is very safe and can even be given intravenously.”
D.K. These are Dr. Blaylock’s recommendations, but I do encourage you to do your own research and consult with your medical advisor because we are uniquely designed.
******* “I have written that research convincingly suggests most disorders of the brain are the result of prolonged inflammation. Usually, brain disorders result from low grade smoldering inflammation*******
“Curcumin has been shown to be king of anti-inflammatories, working as well as, or better than, the most powerful prescription drugs.”
Magnesium: Secret Weapon Against Cardiovascular Disease
“I have learned that magnesium is critical for the health of not only blood vessels, but also every tissue and organ in the body.
Deficiencies are linked to:
- Heart disease
- Abnormal kidney function
- Muscle weakness
- Insulin resistance
- Metabolic syndrome
- Neurodegenerative diseases
- Impaired lung function
- Immune system disorders
“In addition, magnesium has been shown to be a major weapon against depression and even suicide.”
“Magnesium also lowers levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation that is far more important for heart heath than lowering cholesterol. In addition, a growing number of studies show that magnesium plays an important part in preventing heart failure, heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms, and heart muscle degeneration.”
“And yet, pharmaceutical manufacturers hate magnesium- because it is not patentable and it is dirt- cheap.”
MAGNESIUM ENRICHED FOODS:
High magnesium foods include dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fish, beans, whole grains, avocados, yogurt, bananas, dried fruit, dark chocolate, and more. The current daily value (DV) for magnesium is 400mg.
Vitamin B and C Can Perform Miracles
“B vitamins are essential, for everyone’s health.
D.K. There have been many flawed studies saying vitamins don’t help. When you hear that, question who did the study. Question who were the participants in the study. I have read many have been people with long history of diseases and very sick.
Dr. Blaylock gives an example of a misleading study by the “New England Journal of Medicine. They “published an article reporting on a study of 276 healthy people, all of whom were at least 65 years old, who were given one of two regimens: either a daily supplement that contained the B vitamin folate, as well B12 and B6; or a placebo.
After two years, researches analyzed the subjects’ cognitive function and found no statistically significant difference between those who took the vitamins and those who didn’t.
“However, the study was skewed because, like many people, the researchers assumed that cheap vitamins would have the same nutritional value as high quality ones, which is not true.”
Why would the scientist performing studies use poor quality vitamins and minerals?
“There are two reasons: First, they are cheap and often donated by vitamin companies. Second, the scientist know little about vitamin and mineral chemistry- especially as it relates to brain function or chronic illness.”
“Unfortunately, negative stories end up in popular press, causing people to follow bad nutritional advice. Such poor studies are increasing in frequency astronomically. Many are funded by pharmaceutical companies in order to stifle their competition.”
“Other, better controlled studies had the opposite results.”
For instance, vitamin B12 deficiency has been linked to dementia in a number of studies , and when the deficiency was corrected several types of dementia (though not Alzheimer’s) have been reversed.
“Over the last several years, medical practitioners outside of the traditional medical establishment have been using large doses of intravenous doses of vitamin C for a number of ailments, including infections and even cancers, with great success.”
“Yet all the successes are completely ignored by the “evidence-based” medical community. The medical-pharmaceutical orthodoxy would have you think that there is no scientific support for the use of high -dose intravenous vitamin C as a treatment. Nothing could be farther from the truth.”
Maintaining Blood Vessel and Brain Health
“Vitamin C is essential for the health of blood vessels, as studies have revealed.”
- Very low vitamin C levels have been found in patients in critical care units.
- Patients come into the hospital with low antioxidant vitamin levels and their condition often gets worse the longer they are in the hospital.
- The stress of disease or surgery rapidly depletes vitamin C.
- Inflammation inhibits the uptake of vitamin C by the endothelial cells, which control most of the function of the blood vessel.
“Government health agencies have set the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C much too low-just 90 mg. a day. But in the brain, vitamin C has many functions besides being an antioxidant. It also activates genes that regulate cell energy production, transport of iron, formation of blood vessels, and overall cell survival.
*******Co Q10 Improves Heart Function and Protects the Brain*******
“Coenzyme Q 10 is a naturally occurring substance found in every cell in our body. Without it, we would die.
It is so important for metabolism and energy.
“Because so many people (especially the elderly) are lacking in vitamins and minerals, Co Q10 deficiency is very common.
Extreme stress or disease can also make this vital nutrient fall to dangerously low levels in the body. Both clinical and experimental studies have shown that a number of diseases cause CoQ10 to fluctuate significantly.”
“On the other hand,, the level of CoQ10 in cells is supported by a good diet.”
“When heart muscle is damaged by either a heart attack or disease (such as congestive heart failure), it requires more CoQ10 than supplied by the diet, which is deficient in so many nutrients.
*******”Heart biopsies of patients with cardiac disease have shown CoQ 10 deficiency in 50-75% of those examined.”*******
“One of the most impressive benefits of CoQ10 is its ability to improve heart function in patients with congestive heart failure- a condition that is increasing dramatically in America.”
“The best thing about CoQ10 is that there are no side effects; it is completely safe in any amount .”
*******”CoQ10 has produced equally impressive results for protecting the brain—especially against free radicals and lipid peroxidation- and treating neurodegenerative disorders….such as:
- Traumatic injury
- Infections (encephalitis and meningitis)
- Autoimmune diseases
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS)
****** “Several studies have determined that supplemental CoQ10 can also protect neurons from viral damage-including the devastation that is caused by the mumps virus.”*******
VItamin E: Powerful Antioxidant
“One reason for its heart protection is that vitamin E is the principal antioxidant against LDL cholesterol oxidation.. Vitamin C helps prevent vitamin E from becoming oxidized itself- making the combination an even better way to protect against oxidized LDL.
“Vitamin E has shown to do a lot more. It is anti-inflammatory, inhibits platelets from becoming sticky, slightly thins the blood, prevents inflammatory cells from sticking to the artery wall, and stimulate antioxidant enzymes- all things that can prevent atherosclerosis.
*******”Some studies have shown little protection with vitamin E, which led to news stories of its ineffectiveness. But once again, the truth is that the wrong form of vitamin E was used. The most commonly sold form of vitamin E is alpha-tocopherol acetate, a very ineffective and poorly absorbed form. *******
The Truth About Vitamin D
*******“Researchers have discovered that many people, even young people, are significantly deficient in vitamin D.******* Why is that? Because the recommended daily allowance is far too low, and people have been avoiding sun exposure based on recommendations from dermatology experts and government agencies.
Vitamin D doesn’t just affect bone health but all tissue and organs in the body, including the brain and heart, as well as supporting immune function and protecting against cancer.
“Studies using rat models of Parkinson’s disease have shown that vitamin D3 can protect the brain against damage from inflammation.”
*******”There is evidence that vitamin D3 can prevent multiple sclerosis.”*******
******* “A number of studies have shown that vitamin D3 deficiency increases a person’s risk of major depression, which is especially prevalent among the elderly.”*******
*******”People with high levels of vitamin D have lower incidences of breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate cancer, and a significantly lower risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the fastest growing type of cancer in young adults.”
D.K. There is so much research validating the benefits of vitamin D. It is an inexpensive supplement and so beneficial. Please have your vitamin D level checked by a blood draw. I always ask for my vitamin D number so I can track it. I don’t want to be in the low normal range , rather in the optimal range.
What is the optimal range?
Dr. Blaylock says, “for optimal health, D3 blood level should be between 70 and 100 ng/mL.”
“If your vitamin level falls between 40 ng/mL, you’ll need a dose of more than 2,000 IU per day to bring it back to normal. More severe deficiencies may require 5,000 to 10,000 a day to return vitamin D level to optimal levels.”
D.K. Hopefully, something within Dr. Blaylock’s Guide to Supplementation will bring clarity to the sometimes confusing issue of taking vitamins.
I would like to close with thoughts on what a difference one person can make;
Make one person happy each day and in forty years you will have made 14,600 human beings happy for a little time, at least……Charles Willey
D.K. Many blessings are wished you!!!
