Ask the Scientist…Dr. Wentz holds a Ph.D in microbiology with a specialty in immunology from the University of Utah. He developed the first commercially available diagnostic test for the Epstein-Barr virus.
“Dr. Wentz, why are parabens of particular concern to you?”
Dr. Wentz: “Parabens are toxic chemical preservatives and are the most common of all ingredients found in skin-care products.
It is estimated that women are exposed to as much as 50 mg of parabens every day from cosmetics and personal-care products alone.
Parabens exhibit estrogenic activity and are suspected of being carcinogenic.
Current evidence shows parabens to be weak hormone mimics, but among adolescent girls who are undergoing an onslaught of hormonal activity as they develop into mature women, it doesn’t take much to upset the normal transformation from child into adult.
There are some disturbing changes occurring in our young women today. Girls begin developing breasts one to two years earlier than they did forty years ago.
About half of all U.S. girls show signs of breast development by their 10th birthday with 14 percent attaining breast buds between their eighth and ninth birthdays. They are losing a significant portion of their childhood.”…The Healthy Home written by Dr. Myron Wentz
(One study posted by Paul Whaley in Health & Environment research….”A study in 2012 found parabens in almost 100% of breast samples from breast cancer patients.
D.K. I find it alarming how many toxic ingredients are put into our skin-care products to help us halt aging. Is it really worth it? Please allow me to share more from Dr. Wentz’s book The Healthy Home.
Dr. Wentz: “ Do you ever wonder just how many chemicals are being absorbed through the skin and into the body when we use these items? ”
Dr. Wentz: “You don’t have to wonder. A recent study found more than two hundred chemicals present just in the umbilical cord blood of newborns. Once our infants leave the relative safety of the womb, how many more sweet-smelling chemical compounds do we deliberately subject them to?
An estimated 10,500 different chemicals are used in cosmetics, skin-care treatments, and other personal products. “
Knowing that these products have such dangerous ingredients, the next logical question is: How can it be legal to sell toxic products to unsuspecting customers?
The government has come up with the term “maximum safe levels” to tell you how much of a toxic ingredient your body should be able to withstand.
This is the government’s blanket way of saying that a scientist has informed them that, based on animal studies, 5 parts per million of a particular ingredient doesn’t cause health problems that they can detect. At higher levels, however, this same ingredient may show signs of causing anything from hives to cancer.
That such studies have been done may sound reassuring, but the groups typically performing toxicity studies on skin-care ingredients are the manufacturers themselves who want their products to make it to market.
Yet when it comes to clinical studies, I (Dr. Wentz) could design one that shows cyanide was safe in mice. All I would have to do is evaluate the mice two seconds after the cyanide was administered and conclude that they were fine Yet if I waited a minute to recored the data, all the mice would be dead.
Formaldehyde-release Agents is highly effective at killing microbes, which makes it an effective preservative.
It is toxic to cells and can cause cancer.
See for yourself how many of your own products contain formaldehyde-release agents. They’ll likely be listed on your labels as:
- Quaternium 15
- Diazolidinyl urea
- Imidazolidinyl urea
- DMDM Hyantoin
“Look older with Prolonged use!”
Dr. Wentz throughout his book, The Healthy Home echo his concerns for chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis.
“Many anti-aging products contain chemicals that are cytotoxic to your skin cells, so they actually damage them over time.
“It’s quite a business model, really, when you can convince someone that a product will make them look better and at the same time damage the skin so they will need to buy more products.
Using makeup or temporary skin-care fixes to hide damage skin is like painting over rust. Unless you first remove the rust itself, the damage underneath will continue to undermine the beauty of the surface. If you are worried about hiding dry skin blemishes, acne, and such, you should first address your diet, sun protection, immune system, and general health to help with the underlying problem
Dr. Wentz’s Simple Solutions:
- Cut down on toxic preservatives like paragons, phthalates, and formaldehyde by first replacing products that sit on your skin all day- like a moisturizer- with more natural, preservative-free alternatives.
- Focus on eliminating the cause of your skin problems- not on covering up the symptoms.
- Avoid aerosol products that have non spray alternatives. If you must use aerosols, open a window and run your bathroom fan.
- Wash products off your face as soon as you get home instead of waiting until bedtime. A few additional chemical- free hours each day could add up to more than six years over a lifetime.”
D.K. I just touched on a few concerns Dr. Wentz has written about in his book. I use his book as a reference as he goes from room to room in one’s house to make simple solutions for a healthier home.
“The Healthy Home is simply brilliant! This will totally alter the way you look at the home you live in. If you want to protect the health of your family, you must simply read this book.”…Robert G. Allen, New York bestselling author
D.K. I have had several friends pass on because of cancer. These are not elderly friends but folks who should have had many more quality years. It grieves me to see other’s suffer. Prayerfully, I hope something written in this website will be an epiphany to fine tune something in your life, if it is necessary. My goal is to learn as much as I can (to share) and hopefully WE will experience our best health. Our health is indeed our wealth!!!!!
